The War

This series is comprised of works created in the village of Cherkasskiye Tishki during the temporary Russian occupation in the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Russian troops were stationed just 500 meters from the artist’s studio and home. Yuriy and his son have spent 72 days under the occupation.

They lived under the constant shelling, without any communication and barely any food, constantly risking their lives to pass on information about the Russian troops’ positions to the AFU. Despite the daily perils, the Yuriy continued to paint, finding salvation in self-reflection, which allowed him to detach himself from the horrors of the war around him. The images on the canvas convey pain and uncertainty about the future and are largely self-explanatory.
